Christmas Tree

The forest ground was cowered with white specks of snow still resisting the weak winters sun. Here and there, a tiny snowdrop or primrose leaf would peep out to announce awakening, a coming change in the sleeping woods, but silence was still reigning in the glade among the naked broadleaf treesClose to the old oakembraced by its widely spread roots, a seed of a silver fir lay sleepingThat small brown husk was waiting for the spring warms to shed its long winter dreams and step into life.

For the next few daysthe sunshine kept getting stronger and warmer with every dayThe activity on the forest groundthe soft hues of spring flowersthe lively birdsongcreated a festive and jubilant atmosphereThe babbling of the nearby brook ant the liveliness of other inhabitants of the forest enticed the little plant to sprout and get acquainted with its neighboursThey had already taken up all available spacespreading their petals to get plenty of light and the warmth of the sunbefore the trees break into leaf and overshadow the forest ground.

And so one morning the pale green shoot of the little plant wriggled out and pushed its way trough the layers of the last years leavesdelighted with the life surrounding it as far as its eye could reachEven its beautiful dreams could not be compared to the beauty of that new worldEnchanted by the sunlightby the gentle touch of the breeze that caressed it while spreading the perfume of fresh spring blossomthe young plant was filled with an irresistible desire for heightsfor growthfor a chance to find out more about this new worldGuided by its desire for new horizonsthe young plant grew enjoying every new sunny daysoaking up as much as it could of its light and warmth.

The days went byand the until recently naked branches of the trees surrounding the young fir plant were bursting with new green leavesturning the oak wood into a luxurious bowerEverything was growing exuberantlythe grassthe fernsthe flowers of all colours of the rainbowthe moss soft as the teddy bear’s fur …….
All sorts of mushrooms in a variety of pastel shades appeared everywhereColourful butterflies and insects hovered over themthe bees hummedthe caterpillars crawled and industrious ants marchedIt seemed as trough no one sleptday or nightThe forest teemed with lifeembracing our young Silver Firwhich grew in the shade of the tall old oak.
5And so the spring and the summer went byAnd almost suddenlythere was autumnOur fir tree was no longer a small and fragile plantit already towered above the grass and the wild flowersIts horizon widened, but it had to grow even more id order to catch up with the crowns of oak treeswith which it was competing for sunny heightsLeaves started turning id the whole gamut of coloursfrom yellow to reddish to dark brownand falling on the ground wove a beautiful carpetwhich spread throughout the whole forestprotecting the new seeds from the coming coldThe smell of the autumn rains penetrated each of the naked woods and everything looked deadcompletely lifelessOnly our little Fir stood in its greennessin its rich luxurywhich was not just an illusion during the worm seasons but emanated even nowin the greyness and coldthe fresh fragrance of its green needles.

And then one day it started snowingthe snow coweredthe snow cowered the ground and the branchesand the entire nature was lulled into sleepThe Fir enjoyed that new experience of whiteness and peacethinking of how it was going to evoke this snowy season to his sleepy neighbours once they wake up in spring and cower their branches in leaf and open their fragrant petalsThe winter went by slowly as though it would never passThe Fir began to yearn for companyand was happy to see the first crocuseswhich spread all over the glades and opened the gates to spring awakening.

The sun was closer again and warmer every dayOnce more, everything was awake in the most luxurious settingNew life brought joy and happiness, as it did every year. But something was not as it should have beenThe old oakwhich protected the Fir from gusts of wind in stormy nights and offered shade during hot and dry summer daysdid not show any tender blossomsalthough the crowns of the trees nearby had in the meantime already luxuriated in their resplendent greenness. On the day when people came to the forest which some strange implementsfelled the tree and dragged it off somewherethe little Fir finally realized that it would never again see its friend and protectorThe only things remaining of the old oak were just a stump on the forest ground and an empty space in the little Fir’s heartThe days went by and our Fir grew steadilysoon becoming a beautifulyoung treean adornment to its part of the forestThe oak stump was soon overgrown by grass and became almost invisible, but the Fir did not forget it and kept it in its heart forever.

The seasons changed following its natural rhythmand the Silver Fir already knew a great deal about the life cycle of the oak woodNow and then people would comecut the trees that were old and sick and take them to some unknown destinationIt caused both sorrow and fear, but also a certain curiositySorrow and fear would disappear with the arrival of new springwith green shoots springing upspreading the joy of life and friendshipStillthe curiosity about the wide-open spaces remained. As the Fir grewits horizon widened and one day it could make out the roofs of the of the nearby villagewhich was hiding behind a small hillThe Fir could now see the play of the whitish smoke which danced out of the sooty chimney and hear the chatted of childreninterspersed with laughter and shouting.

That year at the beginning of winterwhile the snowflakes kept whirling around sticking to the Fir’s needlesthe cheerful shouting of children crept nearer until it completely surrounded itLoud marry squeals and laughter filled the forest disturbing its sleeping dwellersThe Fir was delighted with the children s happiness and enjoyed watching them pelt each other with snowballsRunning around while playing tag they would touch its branches and shake off fresh layers of snowBecause of the vivid colours of their hats and mittensthe Fir suddenly thought that some new season has arrivedresembling spring or summer more than winter.

The children were followed by two men carrying a shovel and axeand the Fir was terribly frightened when they started walking round it and measuring itFilled with fear and panicthe Fir was dreading its fatewondering if perhaps its time, its end has comeHow could it be the end? I haven’t reached even half of the height of the young oakwhich started growing in the same yearAnd what about my dreams of the heights? I was supposed to grew talloutgrow even the tallest forest treeand see behind all the hillsexperience the spaces that I have dreamt so much aboutWorried and sad, the Fir begged for helpThe nature surrounding it was in deep sleepand the Fir looked towards heaventowards the sparking starswhich held the only hope for its prayersGlittering on the dark blue surface of the infinitethey seemed to have power over all destiniesincluding its ownand the Fir prayed to them from the bottom of its heartasking for more time to fulfil its dreams.

The care the man took not to hurt it while digging and cutting the roots of the rotten oak-tree stump in order to free it made the Fir believe that they did not want to cut it, but to transplant itThe fear disappeared but anxiety remainedfor was there a place that could be more beautiful than the glade in which it grew upWhat place could be better for it than this one, were he lived surrounded by friendsWas there a place that would be better at enticing it to grow and expand its horizons than this oak woodDoubt mixed which curiosity beset it while watching the man who put it on the sledgeafter having dug it out with utmost care.

In the midst of clamour an running around of childrenthe neighing and steady gallop of horsesthe men brought the Fir to the village andcarrying it into the yardplanted it into a huge clay jar and placed it into the houseinto a spacious living roomThe door to the kitchen was open and the fragrance of freshly baked cookies mingled with the fragrance of the Firthe fragrancewhich evoked the snowy mountain heights surrounding the valleyThe children then brought boxes full of multicoloured shiny ballsstarsfigurinesand started decorating its branchesturning it into a beautiful Christmas treefinally crowning it with a golden star with which it almost touched the ceiling.

It was quite a new and unexpected experience for the Firwhich enjoyed the attention and admiration shown by the whole householdThat night the house was filled with the sound of beautiful songsEverybody was singingthe children in their airyfluttery voicesolder men in rough and rasping oneswhile the women brought a special quality into the song with their soft and sweet sopranosThe song filled each nook and cranny and each heartThe song echoed from the neighbouring houses and from the streetsIt was a real evening of the song, and its joy lasted well into the nightalmost till dawn.

And then the holidays endedOrdinary onesfilled with everyday routinereplaced the day of joy and festivitiesSweet memories remainedmemorieswhich would for a long time to come fill the hearts of those who shared the holiday spiritThe Fir was placed with its new acquaintances and became attached to the nostalgia for the oak wood in which it grew up almost disappearedTruethe roomwhich was its new homewas somewhat narrow and cramped its growthand the Fir was slightly worried because its great desire to grow was still as strong as everIts need to see and feel the open spaces had lost none of its vigour.

One dayafter the first snows began to thawthe Fir saw some commotion in the yard through the living room windowthe members of the family were walking arounddiscussing something obviously very importantFor a moment, the Fir thought it might have something to do whit itbecause the men of the house had shovels in their handstools it was already quite familiar withIts guesswork proved correctthey were choosing the best place to transplant itAfter several suggestions they decided to plant it in the middle of the yardwhere it would have plenty of room for spreading its branchesplenty of space to grew tall, as tall as it had always wanted.

The springthe Fir got acquainted with the fruit trees surrounding it in the large gardenExquisite beauty of white cherry blossomsoft pink of the peachbright red tulips and fragrant lilac highlighted the green colour of the Fir and its wonderful silvery sheenwhich gave the tree its nameIn autumnthe sweet smell of quinceapplespears and other fruit competed with the Fit’s fragranceIt grew happy in the new environmentenjoying every moment and every season of the yearIts beauty was the pride of the family and of the whole villagebecause that was a fir beyond compareDuring Christmas season they decorated it with lightswhich sparkled like the stars in the night sky.

While it was growingits horizons kept steadily wideningSoon it was able to seeover the rooftopsthe glade in the wood in which had grown upIt made it happyfor it remembered its childhood with pleasureThe view of the woods and their closeness made it feel as though it had never actually been moved.

And so today the Silver Fir grows on and widens its horizonsand it
will go on growing for manymany years to come because firs live a ling time. And if you happen to pass a little village and see a tall and beautiful fir treeit could just be the Fir from our storyAnd that tree will be pleased when it finds out that you too want to grew and develop and acquire knowledge to widen your horizonsthus discovering the most unbelievable secrets that now you do not even dream of.
The End
